This is Hareta’s world. She grew up in those caged houses with a family of seven when she first came to Hong Kong. Look at how far she has come to get to where she is now. Anyone would be pretty impressed. As a new immigrant who hardly knows any English, she has been working at the Big Four for ten years already. Imagine the hard work behind all these. But she is still not satisfied. She feels lonely every night. She becomes a druggy, a sex addict and a serious alcholic.

In her eyes, the world is like a pyramid. She was born at the bottom of it but she only has to play her cards right. To change destiny, she is willing to do anything at all costs. No rules, no limits. Sex trades are no-brainer. She does not think that destroying others to get to the top would have any bad consequences. Morales and ethics, as well as karma, are just intangible. They don’t exist if you ignore them. Right? Life is so simple.

She is a stereotypical atheist. She thinks that church meetings are just ceremonies to show that you are a good person. Deep down in her heart, she does not believe that there is a God who watches over everybody. What’s worse, she is a Scientologist. Scientologists believe in Darwin’s evolution theory in which she believes that all humans are evolved from monkeys. We are just animals and the world is just a big zoo. No, not a zoo. A safari. It is called “survival of the fittest”. Either you die today, or I kill you first. She believes that it is a competitive universe we live in. If you lose, your life would be over. Out of natural instincts, she has to keep winning. Humans better themselves through competition. Therefore, competition is vital. It makes total sense, doesn’t it?

She thinks that this world is a “winner takes it all” society. It is all or nothing. Either you are the champion, or you are a total loser. Nothing in between. If you win, nobody would ever care about what shameful things you have committed in that rat race. Even if you trade sex, poison others and murder your enemies. Victory is all that counts!

If she wins Emmy, she will own the whole world. If you beat that top 1%, you can basically ignore the rest 99%. Emmy has been the top 1% of the society but Hareta is going to reverse that. All Emmy has is just an intangible halo, a halo which the society has given her based on her looks and outer appearance only. So fragile.

Do you think this kind of world view is making any sense?
