Frauds, adultery, cheating, betrayal, dishonesty, lies, fabrication, mistrust are all okay with Ackley. Yes, You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time, including yourself. When you become a pathological compulsive liar, you are your own biggest victim and start to live in constant illusions, never again be able to tell apart realities and self-imagination. Ackley keeps cheating on Emmy because he thinks he will never be caught. As a consequence, he thinks that no one ever on this planet is monogamous. He is trapped in his own delusions, like a maze runner.
Hareta is in a state of shock. She just can’t let it go. She starts to doubt herself and her attractiveness. Now that Hareta fails to steal Emmy’s husband, she starts to want to destroy Emmy instead. Hareta can’t take it anymore. Hareta can’t stand to see Emmy’s smiley faces. Why does it always rain on Hareta? Why is Hareta infertile with PID infections? Why did Hareta almost lose her life to necrotizing fasciitis at the age of 8?
This leaves Hareta in great agony and self-doubt. She decides to impose all these tragedies on Emmy so Emmy can have a taste of the same misfortune and pain that Hareta went through.
Hareta has been a rather positive test-taker all her life, fighting battles after battles. She faked her blood tests to the Big Four. She asked her friend to sit in for her LSE interviews. She asked her Chinese teacher to write her recommendation letters because that Chinese teacher also does not know any English. She looks happily married because her husband was impotent. She cheated in SAT exams and TOEFL. How far can she go with these “stratgies”?
Very smart moves, indeed calculating. Hareta believes that through sleeping her way upward in this meritocratic city, she can surely manipulate her successes and destiny. Yes, you can offer to sleep with your interviewers, professors, teachers, bosses, HRs, colleagues, mortgage specialists, landlords, lawyers, accountants, clients, super rich billionaires, bankers, and every single person who can give you some benefits along your life path. But the question is how many men and even women can you fuck to build an army that goes against the world? 1000? 2000? Can you blanket the entire society with your 500 evil sex trades?
There is something dead wrong with Hareta’s hygiene. Or maybe she just catches all scariest deadly diseases without a reason. Who knows? If this is what you call smart, you can confidently say that Emmy is an idiotic ignoramus with subpar intelligence.
At this very moment, Hareta makes a decision which she deems as completely normal and rational. And there is no turning back. Crimes of murders, poisoning, backstabbing, adultery and betrayal are sometimes just generated with an ephemeral thought that lasts less than a second. The mind in its own place can make heaven of Hell, and a hell of Heaven. One careless move can surely lose the whole game.
