In Hareta’s understanding, fortunate families are for similar reasons but unfortunate ones have all kinds of misfortunes.

She who would climb the ladder must begin at the bottom. Hareta has been a resilient fighter for most of her life, struggling against the world’s unforgiving nature and her own destiny with strong will. She trips and falls along the way. But in order to climb up the social ladder, it is all worth it in the end, isn’t it? As she remembers, she could not even afford to see a private doctor when she caught necrotizing fasciitis at the age of 8. She almost needed an amputation. Just within days, a tiny cut on her leg quickly developed into a wound that showed almost her bones. She was so close to death but God favors her so much that she recovered in the end, with a big patch of scar to remind her of the misfortunes that really should not happen on a sacred person like her.

When Hareta thinks of all the suffering she has to endure, she no longer pities Emmy because Emmy owns more than she could consume anyways. Hareta is just another Robin Hood. Maybe Hareta was born in a communist country and spent a significant part of her childhood there, so she really cannot take it when she sees others being better off than her. After all, she came from a country where everyone was equally poor. Hareta forces to impose these kind of twisted values onto Emmy who grew up in a super capitalist city.

To be honest, for someone like Hareta to be able to survive this long in a financial city like Hong Kong and work her way up in the business world at the Big Four, it truly is a miracle. She is so “miso-affluence”. She really should not become a investment banker. Who knows what is on her mind? Maybe she just wants to prove her self-worth and the attention that she longs for by stealing others’ ambitions and “dealing” with her clients.

That’s the irony. It takes all sorts to make a world.
